What is Your Window Treatment Style?

Whether your style is contemporary, traditional, or maybe somewhere in between, your window treatments should match your design personality. Some key considerations to consider are color, pattern, texture, and how the fabric is manipulated.

1. Color, pattern and texture: All these elements need to be in the right proportion for the particular style you want. Getting this right will make your window treatments feel unique and custom to your home.

2. How the fabric is manipulated: The different hanging methods are hooks, tab-top, grommets, and rings. Your decorative elements are swags, tassels, branding, and ruffles. The different pleats are box, pencil, butterfly, pinch, and reverse pinch. Then the different types of fabric are shade, curtain, drapery, valance, and cornice.

Depending on the particular style you are aiming for, each of these elements have a certain time and place.

The three main styles we see the most often are traditional, transitional, and modern.

Traditional

Window treatments in the traditional style are most defined by all the little details. In the picture above, a tailor pleat valance with contrasting lining is used to frame the window and hide the hanging hardware.

Traditional treatments can become a major design element in a space. In this Kitchen, the shape of the swag reflects the design of the window, compliments other major design features and adds much needed softness to a typically all hard surface space. Consider how your window treatment fits into the overall design and make sure it doesn't feel like an afterthought.

Modern

Structured shape combined with fabric give these drapery panels a defined role in this living room. Modern window treatments focus either on the pattern of the fabric or simplicity of the structure used. While texture and pattern play a role, the architectural of the vertical lines enhance the classic modern living space. Your eyes will draw up and down highlighting the height of the room.

Function is just as important as decorative treatments. This motorized soft-fold roman shade filters light, adds an extra layer of privacy and insulation, while also adding warmth and softness to a relaxing space.

Transitional

Somewhere between the details of traditional curtains and the simplicity of modern window treatments lies transitional. These treatments are the perfect example of how to dress your windows in a simple, yet inviting way. The textured roller shade incorporates warmth and function while the decorative draperies bring pattern and personality.

In transitional design, you can play with the pattern's scale for an even bigger impact. In this dining room, a traditional rug is paired with a geometric fabric used for the window treatments for a fresh way to make traditional feel updated and classic. Following the architectural lines of your home plays a key role in your treatments feeling unique and customized to your home.
